This Victorian campaign writing slope is made from warm brown mahogany and dates to 1880. The rectangular box is finished with flush brass corner brackets, brass strapping across the lid, and decorative inlaid brass escutcheons and geometric line patterns. The lid features a central cross-shaped brass inlay and stylized corner mountings, while the front panel incorporates intricate brass lines mirroring the escutcheon design around the keyhole. The box measures 50 cm wide and 28 cm deep in practical terms. Items of this type are placed on an office desk or library table to provide a portable writing surface and secure storage for correspondence and documents in a home. The interior houses a green leather writing slope alongside fitted storage compartments, while concealed mechanisms reveal hidden drawers and compartments suited for organizing stationery and small personal items. The solid timber construction and metal hardware suit traditional study spaces, home offices, or studies themed around historical campaign furnishings.

A campaign writing slope is a portable mahogany or hardwood box designed for military officers and travellers during the 18th and 19th centuries. When opened, it reveals an angled writing surface along with compartments for inkwells, quills, and stationery.

These boxes were constructed from dense hardwoods such as mahogany, rosewood, or teak to prevent warping in varied climates. They feature heavy brass corner brackets, flush handles, and brass strapping to withstand travel.

Authentic period examples display flush-fitted brass hardware screwed directly into the wood, screwed joints, and original brass lock mechanisms. Many also incorporate concealed spring-loaded secret compartments inside the structure.

Place the box closed on a study desk, library table, or sideboard to serve as a decorative focal point. Alternatively, display it in an open position on a coffee table to highlight the internal leather writing surface and compartments.

Dust the exterior regularly with a soft dry cloth and apply clear beeswax polish along the wood grain to preserve the finish. Avoid using abrasive metal cleaners on the brass fittings to protect the natural oxidisation and surrounding timber.
