FAQs

Victorian ebonised furniture, often inlaid with exotic woods like amboyna or burr walnut, gained immense popularity during the mid-to-late 19th century. This style was heavily influenced by the Aesthetic Movement and a revival of Renaissance and classical motifs, often designed to mimic expensive Japanese lacquerware.

These pieces typically feature a dense secondary wood such as pine or mahogany that is ebonised (painted or chemically blackened to resemble ebony) and polished. They incorporate contrasting marquetry or parquetry inlays using exotic veneers like amboyna, alongside hand-cut dovetail joints, brass hardware, and glazed glass doors.

Authenticity is identified by hand-beveled glass, traditional joinery methods such as hand-cut dovetails on internal drawers, the presence of natural shrinkage cracks in the wood veneers, and period-appropriate hand-applied finishes like shellac French polish rather than modern polyurethane.

The dark, dramatic finish of ebonised furniture makes it a striking contrast against neutral or brightly coloured walls. Pair these cabinets with contemporary lighting and minimalist decor to highlight their intricate wood inlays and historical character without overcrowding the space.

Protect antique ebonised surfaces and wood veneers by keeping them away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent cracking or fading. Dust regularly with a dry microfibre cloth and apply high-quality beeswax sparingly, avoiding modern silicone-based polishes.
