Description

This is a beautiful 18th century walnut wall mirror. Originally this was a vanity mirror but looks far better off the stand and able to be used on the wall. The quality of the frame is stunning and the aged patina gives this a real warmth. The mirror plate as you can see is also totally originally with the mercury sparkle to the plate and the heavy foxing which I always love. This mirror is a good size as well.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Eighteenth-century mirrors typically feature figured walnut veneers, cushion-moulded or shaped frames, and handcrafted joinery reflective of the Georgian period.

These pieces were constructed using native softwoods or oak as a carcass, overlaid with burr or figured walnut veneers, and fitted with hand-silvered glass plates.

Authentication relies on examining the backboards for age-related shrinkage, inspecting the hand-bevelled or mirror plate for foxing and distortion, and checking for period-correct fixings and timber oxidisation.

Positioning the mirror above a contemporary sideboard or fireplace creates a striking contrast, allowing historical craftsmanship to anchor a minimalist space.

Preservation requires keeping the mirror away from direct sunlight and high humidity, cleaning the glass with a dry or barely damp microfiber cloth, and avoiding chemical solvents on the fragile silvered backing.
