This Georgian miniature oak coffer, or coffor bach, exemplifies traditional English country house style with a diminutive waisted form and a warm brown timber finish. The piece comprises a single-piece lid above four scratch-moulded front panels, exposed dovetail joints on the sides, and a base containing three small drawers fitted with round brass knobs. Two decorative brass escutcheons accent the front facade, complemented by shaped bracket feet supporting the structure at the base. The piece measures 34 cm high, 49 cm wide, and 26 cm deep. Positioned on a sideboard top, this compact storage item serves well in a living room, hallway, or study for holding small keepsakes and household items. The traditional materials and warm timber tones integrate naturally into period and rustic interiors, adding character and practical surface storage to domestic spaces.

Originating in 18th-century Wales, a coffer bach (meaning small chest) is a miniature version of a full-sized coffer, traditionally presented as a marriage gift or used to store valuable linens, silver, and personal documents.

Georgian coffers were predominantly constructed from solid native hardwoods such as oak, elm, or walnut, held together using hand-cut dovetail joints, pegged mortise and tenon joinery, and brass hardware.

Authentic Georgian pieces exhibit hand-sawn timber marks, irregular hand-cut dovetails, original brass escutcheons, natural shrinkage across wood grain panels, and dark, aged oxidisation in unvarnished recesses.

A miniature coffer serves as a functional decorative object atop a sideboard, console, or desk, adding warm wood tones and historical contrast against contemporary neutral backgrounds.

Keep solid oak away from direct heat sources and radiators to prevent timber movement, and nourish the surface periodically with a high-quality beeswax polish applied with a soft microfibre cloth.
