An Exceptional 18th Century Adam Mahogany Armchair

18th century
Description

This is an Exceptionally fine and elegant 18th Century Neoclassical Armchair of the type designed by Robert Adam and often made by the Thomas Chippendale workshop. The shaping of this superbly drawn Chair along with flowing carving of the highest order make it a special example. Having wonderful colour and surface and in the most perfect untouched condition.

Carved with Harebell swags and urn to the centre of the crest continuing on the arms, the delicate splat is fluted with a wheel shaped patera to the centre. The turned legs are fluted and reeded with square tops with carved leafwork.

A masterpiece from the pinnacle of the English Chair making tradition.

Similar examples can be seen at various country houses including Nostell Priory where Robert Adam worked with Chippendale to produce pieces of furniture thought to be amongst the finest ever made.

A set of fourteen Adam designed Chairs produced by Chippendale for Goldsborough Hall can be seen in the metropolitan museum of art, these chairs although not as fine as this example have the same harebell swags and wheel shaped Petera.

Archival Detail
Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.
