Victorian seating from the 19th century often revived earlier historic styles, incorporating elaborate hand-carved motifs and dense hardwoods to project status and craftsmanship.

These pieces typically utilized dense timbers such as mahogany, oak, or walnut, often paired with traditional upholstery fabrics like velvet, damask, or horsehair stuffing.

Authenticity is assessed by examining traditional joinery methods, hand-cut screws or pegs, natural ageing of the timber, and period-appropriate upholstery techniques.

Pairing a historic carved timber chair with minimalist or contemporary furnishings creates a striking contrast that highlights its craftsmanship as a focal accent piece.

Maintain the timber by dusting with a dry cloth and occasionally applying quality beeswax, while protecting velvet upholstery from direct sunlight and moisture to prevent fibre degradation.
