An overmantel mirror is a large glass panel traditionally designed to be hung or placed directly above a fireplace mantelpiece, featuring an ebonised black finish accented with gilded highlights.

These pieces typically utilised a softwood or hardwood frame coated with a dark ebonised finish, featuring hand-applied gold leaf or gilt details and silvered glass plates.

Authentic pieces often exhibit signs of age such as foxing on the mirror plate, hand-cut joinery, old backing boards, and genuine oxidisation on the gilt and ebonised surfaces.

It can be mounted above a fireplace to create a focal point or rested on a sideboard to add depth, reflecting light and contrasting traditional craftsmanship with modern minimalist spaces.

Dust the frame gently with a dry microfibre cloth and use a minimal amount of distilled water or a mild glass cleaner on the glass, avoiding harsh chemicals that could damage the ebonised and gilt finish.
