This set of eight Victorian dining chairs is from 1850 and is made from dark brown rosewood. Each chair features a balloon back with a shaped cresting rail and a carved splat over a shaped lower rail, lift-out padded seats upholstered in light grey fabric, turned and carved front legs, and sabre back legs. The suite measures 84 cm high, 44 cm wide, and 48 cm deep, and the chairs are presented in good condition. Suited for traditional dining rooms or country house interiors, these versatile chairs can be arranged around a dining table to provide comfortable seating for family meals and gatherings. Their classic Victorian silhouette and dark timber finish complement both antique and period-inspired tables, making them practical for everyday use as well as formal entertaining.

Victorian balloon back dining chairs were popularised in mid-nineteenth century Britain and are characterised by a continuous rounded back frame resembling a balloon silhouette, often combined with carved central splats and turned legs.

These chairs were primarily constructed from solid dense hardwoods such as rosewood, mahogany, and walnut, featuring traditional mortise and tenon joinery alongside drop-in or padded upholstered seats.

Authentic nineteenth-century pieces display distinct hand-carved details, deep reddish-brown grain patterns characteristic of rosewood, traditional joinery marks, and appropriate age-related patina on the timber finish.

Pairing Victorian chairs with a contemporary dining table or modern minimalist decor creates a clear visual contrast, particularly when upholstered in neutral or textured modern fabrics.

Clean the timber using a soft cloth and apply a quality beeswax polish periodically to nourish the wood and maintain its lustre, while avoiding direct heat sources to prevent drying.
