FAQs

Overmantel mirrors gained widespread popularity in the 18th and 19th centuries, specifically designed to be hung directly above a fireplace mantelpiece to reflect candlelight and maximise natural light in formal rooms.

These pieces typically feature a carved wood or gesso-on-wood foundation, finished with gold leaf or metallic gilding applied over a traditional bole base, often housing heavy silvered float glass.

Authenticity is usually determined by inspecting the reverse for hand-planed timber boards, examining the glass for imperfections or foxing, and observing the oxidisation patterns on the metal backing.

Such mirrors can be mounted traditionally above a fireplace or propped against a living room wall to add architectural depth, reflect light, and create a striking focal point that bridges classic and contemporary design.

Gilded frames require delicate maintenance using a dry, soft-bristled brush to remove dust, avoiding all commercial chemical solvents or moisture that can damage the fragile historic finish.
