The George III style spans the mid-to-late 18th century, incorporating influences from Palladianism, Rococo, and later Neoclassicism, often characterised by asymmetry, scrolling foliage, and carved wooden frames finished in gold leaf or parcel gilt.

These frames were typically constructed from carved softwoods or hardwoods such as pine or mahogany, coated with gesso, and meticulously water-gilded or oil-gilded with gold leaf. The glass plates were historically hand-blown or cylinder-blown, featuring bevelled edges and hand-silvered mercury or tin amalgams.

Authenticity is indicated by the presence of hand-carved wooden construction rather than moulded composition, oxidisation and foxing within the original mirror glass, hand-cut backing boards held by old rose-head nails, and signs of age such as shrinkage cracks in the gesso.

An antique gilt mirror works effectively as a focal point when hung above a mantelpiece or a sleek modern sideboard, creating a striking juxtaposition between historical craftsmanship and contemporary minimalist furniture.

Gilt surfaces are extremely fragile and should only be dusted gently with a soft, dry brush; moisture, chemical cleaners, and abrasive cloths must be avoided entirely to prevent stripping the delicate gold leaf.
