Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

FAQs

French mirrors, particularly those from the 18th and 19th centuries, often featured carved wooden frames finished with gesso and paint, serving both functional and decorative purposes in formal salons and country homes.

These pieces typically consist of a solid timber frame, often pine or hardwood, featuring hand-carved ornamentation, traditional joinery, layered paint finishes, and silvered glass plates.

Authenticity is indicated by mercury or early silvered glass with natural foxing and oxidisation, hand-beveled edges, old wood shrinkage cracks behind the paint, and hand-cut fixings.

Positioning the piece above a mantelpiece or a low sideboard reflects natural light, enhances spatial depth, and creates a focal point that bridges traditional craftsmanship with modern minimalist spaces.

Maintain the piece by avoiding direct sunlight, cleaning the glass with a lint-free cloth and mild cleaner, and dusting the carved frame gently with a dry, soft brush without using chemical solvents on the painted finish.
