C17th Leather Box

17th century
Description

A handsome little leather bound box with decorative stud work, this style of box is usually attributed a French origin but the original lock on this piece and the fact that the bottom board is beech would suggest it was produced in England, probably by a French craftsman, the interior retains the original wood blocked paper and the key is present to the working lock. The back panel of the box has an old replacement leather patch and leather hinges, the original having failed at some point, other than this the box is a remarkable survival and testament to the quality of leather tanners at this early period

Anglo French. Circa 1670

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

These boxes were portable containers crafted during the 17th century, primarily designed to secure legal deeds, currency, and valuable personal items during travel or home storage.

They typically feature thick hide or leather stretched over a sturdy wooden frame, reinforced with wrought iron latches and decorated with pattern-hammered brass or iron studs.

Authentic pieces feature hand-forged ironwork, subtle irregularities in stud placement from hand hammering, natural surface oxidisation, and hand-joined wooden framework beneath the leather.

Place the box on a sideboard, desk, or bookshelf as a tactile accent piece, serving both as historical ornamentation and as concealed storage for contemporary items.

Keep the item away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent drying, dust gently with a soft dry brush, and apply specialist leather conservator wax sparingly to maintain flexibility.
