Description

A smart and very well made antique Georgian leather and mahogany Gainsborough armchair. This was made in England, it dates from around the 1790’s period.

The quality is superb, this is a nice early model with a gorgeous patina and generous proportions. The leather has just the right amount of wear and has a lovely colour tone, we have had this revived by our leather restorer.

The mahogany has also been re-polished, this is in very good condition for its age, with just some minor wear remaining beneath the polish here and there, there are one or two minor historical repairs, nothing that detracts from the strength or look of the chair.

Width – 28 inches , 71 cm

We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

A Gainsborough chair is a wide, upholstered armchair with open padded arms, short mahogany legs, and a high back, popular during the mid-to-late 18th century for use in libraries and writing rooms.

These chairs were traditionally constructed using dense tropical hardwoods such as mahogany or oak for the frame, stuffed with horsehair or wool, and finished with high-grade cowhide leather secured by brass tacks.

Authentication involves examining the timber grain, hand-cut joinery such as mortise and tenon joints, hand-hammered brass tacks, and natural patina, whilst checking for machine-cut marks or modern glues indicating reproductions.

Position the piece alongside contemporary minimalist furniture to create a contrasting focal point, or pair it with a sleek wooden desk to anchor a home office workspace with traditional character.

Preserve the condition by keeping the piece away from direct sunlight and heat sources, feeding the leather periodically with specialised wax or balms, and dusting the mahogany frame with a soft, dry cloth.
