This Georgian bedside table dates from the eighteenth century, constructed from dark brown mahogany with boxwood inlay detailing along the single drawer front. The elevated surface is enclosed by a three-sided gallery top, complemented by a central pull knob, an open intermediate shelf, and diagonal cross stretchers supporting a scalloped undertier. Standing 107 cm high, 38 cm wide, and 38 cm deep, the piece offers vertical storage suited for narrow bedroom layouts or hallways. Positioned beside a bed or in a living space, the compact footprint provides practical surface area for a lamp, small accessories, or books. The traditional dark timber finish integrates into classic English country house interiors, while the multiple tiers add functional display space without occupying a large floor area.

Originating in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries during the Georgian period, these small standing units were initially designed as bedroom washstands or nightstands. They frequently featured galleried tops to prevent items from sliding off, along with lower tiers and small drawers to house personal accoutrements.

These tables were primarily crafted from solid mahogany or fruitwood, often featuring hand-dovetailed drawer joints, turned wood knobs, and subtle boxwood stringing. Stretchers were integrated near the base, sometimes incorporating decorative shaped platforms for structural rigidity.

Authentic period examples demonstrate hand-sawn timber marks on the reverse and undersides, hand-cut dovetails within the drawers, and natural oxidisation of the timber over time. Original brass or wood hardware will show slight irregularities consistent with historical hand craftsmanship.

A tall mahogany table functions effectively as an accent piece beside a modern bed or within a narrow hallway. The open lower tiers provide functional display space for books or ceramic vessels while maintaining a light visual footprint.

To preserve the timber finish, dust regularly with a soft dry cloth and apply a high-quality beeswax polish once or twice a year. Keep the item away from direct heat sources and direct sunlight to prevent timber shrinkage or fading.
