FAQs

The Napoleon III style, spanning the mid-to-late 19th century in France, is characterised by an eclectic revival of historic motifs, heavily drawing on Rococo and Baroque influences with an emphasis on opulence and intricate ornamentation.

These mirrors typically feature a carved wooden base, often pine or gesso-coated softwood, finished with gold leaf applied via water gilding or oil gilding techniques, housing a silvered sheet glass mirror.

Authentic pieces generally exhibit hand-carved detailing, subtle shrinkage cracks in the gesso, oxidisation or foxing on the original mercury or silvered glass plate, and period-appropriate joinery and backboards.

Such a mirror serves as a dramatic focal point; pairing it with contemporary, minimalist furniture creates a balanced contrast that highlights the craftsmanship without overwhelming the space.

Gilt surfaces are extremely delicate and should be dusted gently with a soft dry brush. Liquid cleaners and abrasive cloths must be avoided entirely to prevent stripping the gold leaf.
