Victorian Burr Walnut Writing Slope With Secret Drawers

Status: This item has been sold
Sold by: In A Nutshell Antiques and Interiors

A lovely Victorian burr walnut writing slope with brass corners, brass strapping and a matching brass cartouche and escutcheon.

Inside, the box is fitted with a good quality green leather writing surface with a gilt tooled border. It comes with a pair of brass topped glass inkwells, a pen tray and there is a small stamp slope. There is a secret compartment with 2 small hidden drawers below the leather surface that springs open by lifting a piece of wood next to the inkwell. The box also comes with its original working key.

The box is in good condition for its age and the leather writing surface is in excellent condition. There are some minor old knocks and marks around the outside of the box and some shrinkage splits and a few old repairs but overall the box has a lovely patina. The interior is generally clean and tidy although there have been a few small old repairs to chips in the wood below the brass catch and around the edges of the leather (see photos). The box has been cleaned and gently polished and is ready for use.

The best description comes from the photos so please look at them all carefully and if you have any questions just ask.
