Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Bedside cabinets, originally developed as pot cupboards in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, became refined furniture pieces during the French Second Empire and Victorian eras. Craftsmanship during this period often incorporated exotic burr veneers, such as amboyna, paired with decorative marquetry and durable marble tops.

Nineteenth-century French nightstands typically utilised fine hardwood frames layered with highly figured timber veneers like amboyna, walnut, or kingwood. Tops were frequently fitted with solid marble slabs to protect the wood, complemented by brass fittings and intricate floral or foliate marquetry inlays.

Authentic pieces feature dense, naturally varied burr grain patterns characteristic of amboyna wood, often framed with boxwood or ebony stringing. Look for traditional joinery techniques such as hand-cut dovetails inside drawers, original marble tops with age-consistent underside wear, and aged brass hardware.

Position the cabinet alongside a upholstered bedstead to create a focal point, or use it as an occasional side table in a sitting room. The rich timber tones and marble surface pair well with contemporary ceramic lamps and neutral textile palettes.

Dust the timber surfaces regularly with a soft cloth and apply a high-grade beeswax polish annually to nourish the veneer. Clean the marble top using a pH-neutral cleaner, avoiding acidic substances that can etch or dull the stone surface.
