This Victorian oak and brass mounted correspondence country house post box dates from 1860 and exhibits a warm brown timber finish. The rectangular wooden body features ornate brass strapwork corners, scrollwork mounts, and a decorative centre appliqué on the lid, alongside two posting slots with engraved plates reading Answered and Unanswered. A detailed brass keyhole escutcheon adorns the front panel, complementing the matching corner mounts and exposed metal fixtures. Measuring 12.7 cm high, 22.8 cm wide, and 12.7 cm deep, this lidded container provides a practical storage solution for correspondence. Placement suits an office desk, library table, or study console in a traditional or period interior. The design functions effectively for sorting mail or organizing stationery while adding historic English country house character to domestic workspaces. Routine placement in modern home offices allows the container to serve its traditional sorting purpose while displaying authentic nineteenth-century craftsmanship.

In nineteenth-century estates, private desktop post boxes were used to sort and store outgoing mail into answered and unanswered categories prior to collection by estate staff or daily postal carriers.

These boxes were predominantly constructed from solid hardwoods such as oak, mahogany, or walnut, and featured decorative brass, nickel, or silver-plated strapwork and escutcheon fittings.

Authentic period examples feature hand-engraved metal plates, period-appropriate lock mechanisms, natural oxidisation on brass components, and signs of wear along the posting slots.

A desktop correspondence box works well placed on a home office desk, console table, or library shelf, functioning as a stationery sorter or structural decorative object.

Dust regularly with a dry microfibre cloth and apply a clear beeswax polish sparingly to the wood. Avoid applying harsh chemical cleaners to patinated brass mounts.
