Early 19thc, Caned Regency Lions Paws Open-arm Chair, Manner Thomas Hope C1820

19th century
Description

Early 19thC, Caned Regency Lions Paws Open-Arm Chair, manner Thomas Hope C1820

A superbly stylish early 19th century, circa 1820.., beech wood Regency armchair with exquisite hairy lions paw feet arm supports.

Modelled and influenced by esteemed furniture designer of the period, Thomas Hope and Thomas Sheraton who inspired chairs of this style and of the correct early 19th century period.., sufficient evidence to call it in the manner of Thomas Hope.

An excellent design antique chair of historic and considerable decorative appeal. The chair is very original without evidence of loss, wobbles, work or substantial repair, other than the small repair to 1 arm where it joins the back rest, see images, this is minimal and we may consign to the workshop to have this corrected, in the meantime it is structurally excellent and very stable.., a 20th century replaced cane seat.

A wonderful Regency chair, it’s possible that at some early part of it’s like it may have been painted, albeit no traces of paint residue, examples of these feature with gilded lions paw sections, perhaps ebonised or painted to the fashionable colours of the 19th century.

A superb design with an established time worn patina which authenticates and lends a charming, elegant personality.
