This oversized ''Carriage clock'' in an xquisite rouge marble case with gilded mounts and handle, has an eight day movement with english lever platform escapement striking on a bell. The gilded arabic dial has a foliate centre in frosted ormolu with club and spade hands. The movement is signed by A.D. Mougin. on th etop of the clock a second dial housing a mercury thermometer and compass with fahrenheit and reaumur scales.
Mougin was a major french clockmaker from the mid nineteenth century with premises on the Rue de Turenne in Paris, and the Montbeliard region of eastern France. His clocks won gold medals at two exhibitions.
This clock dates from circa 1870 and is a rare and unusual design.
