This pair of 1850 Tyrolean Swiss Mountain Folk side chairs belongs to the Alpine Folk Art style and is constructed from solid walnut with a warm brown timber colour and a smooth polished finish. Each chair stands on four splayed turned legs slotted into tenoned seat joins, supporting a plank seat with rounded edges. The shaped high backrests contain cut-out handle apertures, with one chair featuring relief carved initials C.C. and the date 1843 in decorative cartouches. The chairs show natural surface variation, simple pegged joints, and an aged patina. Each chair measures 85 cm high, 40 cm wide, and 35 cm deep. These rustic side chairs suit placement as accent seating in a farmhouse dining room, hallway, or study. The sturdy construction provides everyday usability while maintaining traditional folk character. The contrasting carved details on the backrest offer visual interest for interior styling.

Tyrolean folk art chairs, often referred to as Stabbullen, are traditional alpine seating pieces crafted across regional mountain communities in Austria, Switzerland, and Northern Italy during the 18th and 19th centuries.

These chairs were typically constructed using locally sourced dense hardwoods such as walnut, pine, or fruitwood, featuring wedge-tenoned splayed legs set directly into thick timber plank seats without stretchers.

Authentic pieces frequently display hand-carved initials, dates, or regional crests on the backrest, alongside visible timber wedging on the seat surface where the splayed legs join.

These sculptural wooden chairs work effectively as accent seating in narrow hallways, flanking a rustic console table, or used as distinctive side chairs in eclectic dining settings.

Preserve the timber finish by dusting regularly with a soft cloth and applying a clear beeswax polish periodically, while keeping the furniture away from direct heat sources.
