Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

FAQs

A cheval mirror is a freestanding, full-length dressing mirror suspended on a frame with pivot pins, allowing the glass to tilt. Originating in France during the late 18th century, the term derives from the French word for horse, referencing the four-legged frame.

Authentic period pieces are traditionally crafted from solid timbers such as mahogany, walnut, or oak, featuring mortise and tenon joinery. The mirror plate is typically secured within a pivoted wooden frame supported by upright pillars and robust feet.

Authentic pieces exhibit period-appropriate joinery, hand-turned or carved wooden components, and original brass or iron pivot hardware. Examination of the glass plate often reveals slight imperfections, silvering oxidation, or backboards consistent with historical manufacturing techniques.

This piece functions effectively as a focal point in a bedroom, dressing room, or hallway, reflecting natural light and adding vertical emphasis. Pairing it with contemporary minimalist decor creates a sophisticated contrast against the rich timber tones.

Maintain the timber by dusting with a soft, dry cloth and applying natural beeswax periodically to nourish the wood grain. Avoid using chemical glass cleaners directly on aged mirror plates to prevent moisture seepage behind the silvering.
