We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

French overmantle mirrors originated in the 18th and 19th centuries, specifically designed to be hung above a fireplace mantel to reflect light and enhance the sense of space in formal rooms.

Authentic period pieces typically feature a hand-carved wooden frame, often built from pine or hardwood, coated in gesso and finished with paint or gilding, housing hand-silvered glass plates.

Authenticity is indicated by historical joinery methods, heavy foxing or oxidisation on the mercury or silvered glass plate, and hand-applied gesso showing natural crazing and wear consistent with age.

These mirrors can be mounted traditionally above a fireplace or leaned against a living room wall to create an intentional focal point that balances contemporary minimalism with historic texture.

Preserve the frame by dusting gently with a dry cloth and avoiding chemical cleaners. Clean the glass sparingly with a mild, non-ammonia solution applied to a cloth rather than directly onto the mirror to protect the original backing.
