FAQs

Regency convex mirrors, often called bullseye mirrors, gained popularity in the early 19th century during the British Regency period, prized for their ability to reflect a wide panoramic view of a room.

Authentic pieces are typically constructed from hand-carved wood or gesso over a timber base, finished with hand-applied gold leaf and featuring a spherical blown-glass mirror plate.

Authentication involves examining the gesso and wood construction for age-related micro-cracks, checking the backboards for age and construction methods, and inspecting the silvering of the convex glass plate for natural oxidisation.

Interior designers often use these mirrors as focal points in living rooms or hallways, pairing them with minimalist surroundings to allow the ornate gold frame to stand out without visual clutter.

Giltwood frames should be dusted extremely gently with a soft, dry ostrich feather duster, avoiding all liquids, commercial cleaning agents, and direct sunlight to prevent degradation of the delicate gold leaf surface.
