This set of seven dining chairs originates from the Cafe Royal in London and dates from the 1920 style period. Each piece consists of a dark brown steam-bent beech frame with a curved top rail and a recessed seat rail designed for a drop-in seat pad, though the original upholstered seats are absent. The wood displays signs of age and handling through surface marks and light wear across the timber. Individual chairs stand 76 cm high, 41 cm wide, and 43 cm deep, forming a compact set suitable for daily dining or seating arrangements around a kitchen table or study desk in a contemporary home.

Bentwood furniture gained widespread popularity during the mid-to-late nineteenth century following the development of steam-bending techniques. Designed for durability and mass production, these lightweight timber chairs became ubiquitous across European cafes, bistros, and public halls.

Traditional bentwood chairs are predominantly constructed from solid beechwood, which responds well to steam bending. The components are shaped under heat and pressure before being secured with exposed screws and internal corner blocks, often featuring woven cane or drop-in timber seats.

Authentic period pieces often feature impressed maker marks or paper labels under the seat frame. Structural indicators include hand-shaped steam-bent timber, original slotted screws, aged patina around high-touch areas, and consistent wear along the lower legs and stretchers.

Bentwood chairs integrate easily into contemporary schemes when paired with solid timber dining tables or modern marble tops. Their curved silhouettes provide organic shape and contrast against clean, architectural lines in dining rooms and kitchen spaces.

Maintain bentwood timber by dusting regularly with a soft, dry cloth and applying a clear natural beeswax paste periodically to nourish the finish. Avoid placing timber near direct heat sources or high humidity to prevent joint movement or timber cracking.
