FAQs

Chinese Chippendale emerged during the 18th century, drawing inspiration from Thomas Chippendales designs which incorporated Chinese motifs, asymmetrical scrollwork, and natural elements like pagodas and birds.

These pieces are traditionally constructed from softwood or hardwood carved frames, then finished with gesso and gold leaf gilding.

Authenticity is determined by examining the hand-carved detail, the presence of historical gesso cracking, the type of joinery, and the oxidisation patterns on the original mercury or silvered glass plate.

Mount the piece as a focal point above a minimalist console table or fireplace mantel to create a striking contrast between historical ornamentation and contemporary clean lines.

Dust gently with a dry, soft feather duster and avoid liquid cleaners, direct sunlight, and high humidity to protect the delicate gold leaf and gesso surface.
