Treen refers to small, functional wooden household items made from the 16th century onwards, often hand-turned on a lathe. Tobacco pots became particularly popular in the 18th and 19th centuries as tobacco consumption rose in Europe, particularly in Britain and the Netherlands.

These pieces were typically crafted from native and exotic hardwoods such as walnut, oak, mahogany, fruitwood, and boxwood. Artisans used lathe-turning techniques to shape the body, lid, and base, often incorporating contrasting wood segments or marquetry banding for decorative effect.

Authentic pieces exhibit signs of age such as hand-cut tool marks, shrinkage cracks, natural wear patterns, and a warm wax patina developed over centuries. The weight of the timber and traditional construction methods, such as pegged joints or threaded lids, also help determine authenticity.

This piece works well as a decorative accent on a bookshelf, mantelpiece, or executive desk, adding warmth and historical texture to a room. Pair it with other organic materials like leather, brass, and ceramics to create a curated, layered aesthetic.

Keep wooden items out of direct sunlight and away from heat sources to prevent cracking and warping. Maintain the finish by occasionally applying a microcrystalline wax, avoiding water or chemical cleaning agents.
