This is a wonderful example of the classic Welsh stick chair in native ash and sycamore, with an elaborately shaped crest rail above a stick back, with a very complex and unusual five-piece armrest (one for the collectors!) with turned front supports, over a thick seat raised on four outward-splayed shaped legs united by a H-stretcher.
This is a nice collector''s example, with traces of historical paint largely worn through on the seat, armrests and back, giving the much sought-after effect of an accumulated surface finish.
Good natural surface patination, Swansea Valley (Glamorgan), circa 1780.
(Old replacements to the front of the arms - see close-ups)
