Silver gilt mirrors gained prominence in European interior design during the 18th and 19th centuries, particularly within French chateaux and formal drawing rooms, where silver leaf was applied to wooden frames to catch and reflect candlelight.

These frames are typically constructed from carved wood, such as pine or hardwood, which is coated in a gesso layer before being meticulously covered with fine silver leaf and hand-burnished.

Authenticity is indicated by the presence of hand-beveled glass plates, natural oxidation and wear of the silver leaf, traditional joinery on the reverse, and gesso shrinkage cracks beneath the metallic finish.

Positioning the mirror above a modern minimalist console table or leaning it casually against a neutral wall creates a striking juxtaposition between historical texture and clean, modern lines.

Maintain the piece by dusting gently with a dry microfibre cloth, avoiding chemical cleaning agents that can strip the delicate metallic leaf, and placing it away from direct sunlight and high humidity.
