19th Cetury Leather Liabrary Desk Chair

19th century
Description

Fine quality 19th Century period mahogany library desk chair with horseshoe back.

Circa 1860/1870’s.

Upholstered in brown buttoned leather, with lovely carved mahogany scroll ends on turned legs with castors.

The leather seats look original however they have most probably been upholstered around 60 years ago in wonderful brown leather resting on a central splat with 2 angled carved Mahogony supports and rear splayed legs. The front legs have original brass castors.

The leather is in great condition, with a great patina and loads of character, with no tears.

These chairs have been given a light clean.

Great quality with excellent leather and good proportions.

During the 19th century, leather library chairs were highly prized and sought-after items in any well-appointed library or study. These chairs were typically crafted from high-quality materials, such as fine-grained leather, hardwood frames, and hand-carved details.

One of the defining characteristics of leather library chairs from the 19th century was their deep, plush seats and wide, comfortable armrests. These chairs were designed for long periods of reading or writing, and as such, they had to be both supportive and comfortable. The leather used in these chairs was often tanned and dyed to a rich, warm colour that only improved with age and use.

In addition to their functional design, leather library chairs of the 19th century were also admired for their ornate and elegant details. Many chairs featured intricate carvings and scrollwork, often in a classic or neoclassical style. Some chairs were also embellished with brass or bronze accents, such as claw feet or decorative studs.

These chairs were not only functional and aesthetically pleasing, but they also spoke to the wealth and refinement of their owners. A well-crafted leather library chair was a sign of both education and financial prosperity. As such, many wealthy families and individuals would invest in multiple chairs for their libraries or studies.

Today, 19th-century leather library chairs remain highly sought after by collectors and enthusiasts. Their timeless design and superior craftsmanship have ensured that they continue to be a prized possession for those who appreciate the beauty and history of fine furniture. Whether in a private home or a public space, a leather library chair from the 19th century adds both elegance and comfort to any space.
