A French 18th Century carved giltwood mirror. Crisply carved with typical rococo motifs, of shells, scrolls, and a large decorative cresting. Complete with the original now a little opaque mercury glass. A very original example, with no overpainting or repairs, obviously in one place on a wall for the majority of it's time.

Originating in the eighteenth century, Rococo giltwood mirrors are characterised by asymmetrical scrollwork, naturalistic foliage motifs, and hand-carved timber frames finished with gold leaf.

Craftsmen carved the frame from timber, applied layers of plaster-like gesso to smooth the detail, coated it with coloured clay called bole, and delicately applied thin sheets of genuine gold leaf.

Authentic period mirrors feature signs of hand-carving irregularities on the reverse, hand-forged hanging fixings, light oxidisation on the glass plate, and reddish clay bole visible where gold leaf has worn naturally.

Position the mirror centrally above a fireplace mantelpiece or a minimalist side console to create a dramatic architectural focal point that reflects natural light.

Dust the carved frame gently using a soft, dry brush, avoiding any water, chemical spray, or liquid polish that can dissolve the underlying gesso and detach gold leaf.
