Spa boxes, historically produced in European spa towns during the late 18th and early 19th centuries, were sold as souvenirs to affluent travellers. They were typically used to hold small personal items, letters, or keepsakes.

These boxes are generally constructed from lightweight native softwoods such as pine or deal, featuring hand-cut dovetail joints. The exterior surfaces are prepared with gesso and decorated with hand-painted scenes and decorative borders, often finished with a protective varnish.

Authenticity is determined by examining the ageing of the materials, hand-mixed pigments, and natural craquelure in the varnish. Genuine pieces exhibit period-appropriate construction methods, hand-wrought nails or wooden pegs, and genuine wear consistent with age.

An antique painted box can be placed on a bookshelf, mantelpiece, or side table as a focal point. Its historical scene adds texture and a layer of curated character to both traditional and modern living spaces.

Preserve antique painted wood by keeping it away from direct sunlight, extreme temperature fluctuations, and high humidity to prevent pigment fading and wood warping. Clean only with a soft, dry cloth and avoid chemical polishes.
