Fine Carved Oak Gothic Revival Box

Description

A carved oak Gothic Revival period table box. The box is superbly carved on all sides with a repeat pattern featuring circular designs intersected with foliate motifs. The quality of the work is such that I suspect this to be a master craftsmen sample piece or even an apprentice piece, this would also explain the relatively small size of the box. The designs are repeated perfectly and each piece of carving is worked crisply and precisely. The box is in excellent untouched condition with the odd minor knock. The oak has developed a good patina and colour over time. The box is a wonderful example of the later Gothic Revival and Arts and Crafts styles. C.1880.
