17th Century Dutch Walnut Captain’s Chair’

Status: This item has been sold
Sold by: William Carr Antiques

A very rare and intriguing three legged walnut captain’s chair, Netherlands. C.1620

Designed to be used on a ship, either by the captain or navigator. During rough weather the chair could be fastened to the floorboards with pegs or rope, hence the plugged square holes at the back of the seat and arm rest.

With a tremendous original patina and colour to be expected after centuries at sea. Structurally very good, with sympathetic repair.

An almost identical chair in form, barring some carved detail to the frame is regarded by some as one of the oldest maritime chairs in existence. This related chair is dated 1621 and bares the coat of arms of Middelburg.
