William Carr Antiques has dated this piece to the 17th Century.
Designed to be used on a ship, either by the captain or navigator.

With a tremendous original patina and colour to be expected after centuries at sea. Structurally very good, with sympathetic repair.
An almost identical chair in form, barring some carved detail to the frame is regarded by some as one of the oldest maritime chairs in existence. This related chair is dated 1621 and bares the coat of arms of Middelburg.
