An excellent mid Victorian string barrel or large proportions. This wonderful example is made from Lignum Vitae, one of the hardest woods know to man. The cylindrical body, lid and base are beautifully turned from one piece, showcasing the grain and quality of this lovely wood. The lid has a central aperture for the string along with a carved screw fitting, which secures it tightly to the body. String barrels such as this were often used on shop counters, allowing items that had been purchased to be safely wrapped for you. A charming piece from a bygone era and still usable today for its original intended purpose. Dimension below.
