Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A Victorian string barrel is a turned wooden desktop or countertop container designed to hold a ball of twine or string, allowing the cord to be pulled through a small aperture in the top lid while keeping the main spool enclosed.

String barrels were predominantly turned from dense, heavy hardwoods such as lignum vitae, boxwood, walnut, or mahogany, chosen for their durability, heavy mass, and resistance to wear during frequent daily use.

Authentic 19th-century lignum vitae exhibits distinct graining with dark brown to greenish undertones, notable physical weight due to high wood density, faint lathe marks from hand-turning, and micro-cracking or surface patination consistent with natural drying over time.

A turned wooden string barrel serves as a functional or decorative accent when placed on an office desk, a styled bookshelf alongside leather-bound volumes, or a kitchen island counter within a heritage setting.

Preserve treen by keeping it in an environment with stable humidity levels, away from direct heat sources or sunlight, and periodically applying a thin coat of natural beeswax polish to protect the timber.
