Condition Report:

This is a fine quality antique English Georgian mahogany carver, in the style of Chippendale, with a “ribbon back” design, ideal as a dining / desk or occasional chair, with an upholstered red seat, circa 1800, in excellent original condition. Nominal old use marks to the leading edges of the chair but nothing significant considering their age. Archival Detail
Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Chippendale furniture from the 18th century is characterised by solid mahogany timber construction, intricately carved back splats or rails, and balanced classical proportions influenced by Rococo, Gothic, and Chinese design traditions.

Georgian carver chairs were built using solid hardwood jointed with hand-cut mortise and tenon framework, reinforced with lower H-stretchers for structural strength, and fitted with drop-in or webbed stuffed seats.

Authentic period chairs feature hand-turned or hand-carved elements with subtle variations, hand-sawn tool marks on unexposed frame undersides, natural timber shrinkage around joints, and aged surface patination.

An antique carver chair can be styled at the head of a contemporary dining table, placed alongside a modern writing desk, or used as an accent piece in a study corner alongside minimalist floor lamps.

Maintain mahogany woodwork by dusting with a soft microfibre cloth and applying a natural beeswax polish annually, keeping the piece positioned away from direct radiator heat and damp conditions.
