This Arts and Crafts dining chair originates from circa 1910, following a design by Philip Clissett. The piece is constructed from warm brown oak with a visible timber grain, paired with a natural woven straw rush seat. Four horizontal slats form the bar back, each carved with a central dip, supported by upright posts with small finials at the top. The lower structure incorporates turned front stretchers with globular wooden turnings, plain side rails, and straight cylindrical legs. Signs of age include gentle surface wear across the timber. Measuring 99 cm high, 48 cm wide, and 46 cm deep, this side chair provides seating for a dining table or desk in a home today.

The Arts and Crafts movement emphasised traditional craftsmanship, simple geometric or organic forms, and unadorned natural materials. Chairs from this era often feature solid oak frames, visible joinery, shaped back slats, and hand-woven natural rush seats.

These chairs were typically constructed from solid native hardwoods such as oak, ash, or elm. The seats were hand-woven using dried freshwater bulrushes or cattail strands twisted into tight ropes.

Authentic pieces exhibit mortise and tenon joints, honest grain patterns without heavy opaque varnishes, hand-cut back slats, and natural wear to the lower stretchers and rush seating.

An oak side chair can serve as a single accent seat in a hallway, sit alongside a minimalist modern desk, or be paired with mismatched wooden dining chairs around a modern timber table.

Rush seats should be dusted regularly with a soft brush or gentle vacuum attachment. To prevent the rush fibers from drying out and cracking, occasionally wipe the surface with a slightly damp cloth.
