Regency toleware refers to lacquered and painted metal objects produced primarily during the late 18th and early 19th centuries, heavily influenced by neoclassical tastes and Asian export goods.

These items were typically made from pressed or soldered sheet iron or tinplate, which was then coated with multiple layers of japan lacquer and hand-painted or gilded with floral or chinoiserie motifs.

Authenticity is determined by the weight of the metal, the craquelure and patina of the hand-applied japanning, and the presence of genuine hand-painted gilt detailing rather than modern transfer prints.

Such pieces work well as accent items on coffee tables, bookshelves, or desks, adding texture, historical contrast, and a touch of metallic sheen to modern or traditional schemes.

Preserve toleware by keeping it in stable humidity away from direct sunlight, dusting gently with a dry microfibre cloth, and avoiding all water, solvents, or abrasive cleaning products.
