Originating in the early 19th century, Regency cheval mirrors are free-standing full-length mirrors set within heavy upright posts. They typically feature neoclassical proportions, turned or reeded columns, finials, and splayed legs resting on brass castors.

These mirrors were constructed primarily from dark hardwoods, most notably mahogany or rosewood, often featuring flame mahogany veneers. The mirror plates historically used silvered glass, held in place with wood framing and brass tension knobs on the sides.
