Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A trumeau mirror originated in 18th-century France as an architectural wall element designed to fill the space between windows or sit above a mantelpiece. It combines a mirror glass plate with a decorative painted oil canvas or carved relief panel set within a single wooden frame.

These mirrors were typically crafted with carved wooden frames, often painted in soft neutral or pastel tones, featuring hand-applied gold leaf gilding over gesso. The decorative panels often featured oil paintings on canvas or hand-carved wood motifs.

Authentic period trumeau mirrors show natural age-related craquelure on painted panels, subtle wear or tarnish on gold leaf highlights, original hand-cut wood backing panels, and characteristic mercury or silvering oxidisation on the mirror glass.

A trumeau mirror functions best placed above a fireplace mantel, a hallway console table, or a dining room sideboard to anchor the room. Its vertical proportions create architectural height and introduce historical texture to contemporary or traditional spaces.

Dust the painted wood and gilded areas gently with a dry, soft microfiber cloth or camel-hair brush, avoiding water or chemical cleaners that can lift gilding and paint layers. Clean the glass separately by applying glass cleaner directly to a cloth rather than spraying the frame.
