FAQs

Overmantel mirrors gained prominence during the 18th and 19th centuries, specifically designed to be hung directly above fireplace mantels to reflect candlelight and natural daylight into principal reception rooms.

Traditional mirrors from this era typically feature solid timber frames such as mahogany or walnut, often adorned with hand-gilded gesso ornaments, mortise and tenon joinery, and silvered glass plates with bevelled or flat edges.

Authentic pieces exhibit signs of age such as foxing or oxidisation within the mirror plate, hand-cut screw heads, shrinkage cracks in the wood, and traditional gold leaf application rather than modern metallic paints.

Positioning an overmantel mirror above a fireplace anchors the room by adding vertical height and reflecting light, pairing effectively with both minimalist modern furnishings and traditional period architecture.

Maintain the integrity of the piece by dusting with a soft, dry cloth, avoiding harsh chemical cleaners on the wooden frame and gilt details, and ensuring stable humidity levels to protect the antique glass and backing.
