Satsuma ware is a type of Japanese earthenware originating from Satsuma Province in Kyushu, traditionally characterised by an ivory-coloured crackle glaze and elaborate overglaze enamel and gilt decoration, reaching the height of its popularity during the Meiji period.

These vessels are traditionally formed from local clay, fired to create a porous earthenware body, and coated with a transparent crackle glaze before being hand-painted with mineral pigments and gold leaf details.

Authentic pieces typically exhibit a fine network of crackles in the glaze, weight appropriate to earthenware, hand-painted details with tactile layers of enamel and gold, and often feature artist or kiln marks on the base.

These pieces can be used as standalone decorative objects on consoles, sideboards, or mantels, paired with minimalist surroundings to highlight their intricate craftsmanship and historical character.

Clean antique ceramics gently with a soft, dry microfibre cloth to remove dust, avoiding water, chemical cleaners, or abrasive materials that could damage the delicate overglaze enamel and gold leaf.
