Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This Edwardian folding travel mirror originates from Sorrento, Italy, and belongs to the Italian Sorrento Ware style. It is made from warm brown olive wood with wood inlay work, featuring a rectangular box format that incorporates a sliding mechanism and the word Sorrento inscribed on the side panel. The top surface displays a central oval panel enclosing marquetry inlay depicting figures on a dark background, surrounded by fine line border details and visible signs of surface wear to the timber. The piece measures 15 cm high, 13 cm wide, and 19 cm deep. In a modern home, it suits placement on a bedroom dressing table or a study sideboard top as a decorative and functional accessory.

FAQs

Sorrento ware refers to decorative wooden objects produced in Sorrento, Italy, beginning in the early nineteenth century. Local woodworkers developed intricate marquetry techniques using native woods such as olive and walnut to create souvenirs for wealthy travelers on the Grand Tour.

These pieces were typically constructed from olive wood and inlaid with contrasting veneers such as walnut, holly, or stained woods. The mechanisms used simple brass pin hinges or sliding wooden tracks to secure the folding mirror casing.

Authentic pieces feature hand-cut wood inlays showing slight variations in line width and natural wood grain. Look for regional motifs such as traditional dancers or town names inlaid directly into the timber, alongside natural age-related patination and oxidisation of the varnish.

Position the piece open on a dressing table, sideboard top, or bookshelf to display both the mirror and the decorative inlaid cover. Pairing timber objects with neutral stone surfaces or books creates balanced texture in contemporary interiors.

Dust gently with a clean microfibre cloth and apply a thin layer of natural beeswax paste annually to preserve the timber finish. Avoid liquid cleaners, direct sunlight, and placement near heat sources to prevent the thin marquetry veneers from lifting or warping.
