A tambour cabinet features a sliding door made of narrow wooden slats glued to a canvas or leather backing, which tracks along a groove. Popularised in the 19th century, this design allowed for space-saving closure in offices and studies.

These pieces were typically constructed from solid hardwoods like walnut, mahogany, or oak, utilising traditional joinery such as dovetailing for drawers and precision-milled tracks for the slatted tambour mechanism.

Authentic period pieces feature hand-cut joinery, old-growth timber grain, traditional slot-head screws, and canvas-backed slatted shutters that show natural wear and patination along the wooden tracks.

This piece functions effectively as a stylish storage solution in a home study or living room, contrasting cleanly against minimalist contemporary decor while providing concealed storage for documents or electronics.

Maintain the timber by keeping it away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent warping. Periodically feed the wood with a traditional beeswax polish and gently clean the tambour tracks to ensure smooth operation.
