Ormolu - (from French 'or moulu', signifying ground or pounded gold) is an 18th-century English term for applying finely ground, high-carat gold in a mercury amalgam to an object of bronze. The mercury is driven off in a kiln leaving behind a gold-coloured veneer known as 'gilt bronze'.

The manufacture of true ormolu employs a process known as mercury-gilding or fire-gilding, in which a solution of nitrate of mercury is applied to a piece of copper, brass, or bronze, followed by the application of an amalgam of gold and mercury. The item was then exposed to extreme heat until the mercury burned off and the gold remained, adhered to the metal object.

After around 1830 because legislation had outlawed the use of mercury other techniques were used instead. Electroplating is the most common modern technique. Ormolu techniques are essentially the same as those used on silver, to produce silver-gilt..

This nineteenth-century French Empire style cylindrical pedestal display cabinet combines giltwood, glass, fabric, and brass in a gold colourway. The piece stands on a circular turned pedestal base with fine mouldings, rising to a glazed cylindrical cabinet section enclosed by a hinged door with a slim vertical brass frame. An internal white fabric-covered shelf sits above a matching white fabric-lined base, while the top features decorative scrollwork and fine guilloche borders with aged surface cracks visible on the wood. Measuring 119 cm high, 37.5 cm wide, and 37.5 cm deep, the cabinet functions well in an empty corner or hallway to display small curiosities and objets d'art in a living room, study, or bedroom setting.

A French giltwood pedestal display cabinet, or vitrine column, is a freestanding 19th-century storage piece designed to display small collectibles, porcelain, or sculptures at eye level behind protective glass.

These cabinets are constructed from carved timber frames coated with layers of gesso and finished with applied gold leaf gilding, complemented by fitted glass panels and fabric-lined interior shelves.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-carved wood details beneath gesso layers, subtle surface wear showing the red or yellow clay bole base beneath the gilding, and original period brass hardware.

Position the piece as a focal point in a foyer, alcove, or corner space to display decorative ceramics or small antiquities against a neutral wall backdrop.

Dust giltwood surfaces lightly with a dry soft-bristled brush, avoid applying liquid cleaners to water-gilded areas, and clean glass elements using a damp microfibre cloth.
