Why Sellingantiques dated this piece to THE 1920s:
Four-way bookmatched parquetry on the top: skilled French cabinet work.
Dovetailed drawer box: traditional assembly before modern factory methods.
Slight shrinkage line along the centre veneer seam: decades of natural wood movement.
Gentle rubbing to the foot tips: unforced wear from long domestic use.

This is an independent date report produced by Sellingantiques using its own proprietary system. The process uses the photographs shown on this page. The system is never told the date the dealer has declared. This report shows that the two dates corroborate.

Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This French Louis XV style side table dates from 1920 and takes the form of a tall rectangular piece in warm brown walnut veneer. The serpentine top displays geometric parquetry inlay, a single front drawer with a small brass pull handle, and an undershelf positioned midway down the frame. Slender cabriole legs support the structure, finishing in simple pad feet, while the frieze beneath the drawer exhibits a gently undulating profile. The wood grain shows contrasting directions on the top, shelf, and drawer front, creating a panelled visual effect. Measuring 77 cm high, 45.5 cm wide, and 30 cm deep, the table fits neatly beside an armchair or at the end of a sofa in a living room, hallway, or bedroom. The compact footprint makes it practical for displaying a small lamp or decorative object while offering surface space and a drawer for small items, complemented by the lower tier for books or magazines.

FAQs

French Louis XV style side tables feature asymmetrical organic curves, slender cabriole legs, serpentine edges, and decorative veneering techniques such as parquetry or marquetry.

These tables were typically constructed with solid wood frames, such as oak or fruitwood, covered in decorative walnut, rosewood, or kingwood veneers, complemented by small brass drawer handles.

Authentic pieces display hand-cut veneer joinery, natural timber oxidation beneath original finishes, hand-carved leg joints, and period-appropriate drawer construction such as hand-cut dovetails.

A classic French walnut side table functions effectively as an accent piece next to clean-lined modern seating, integrated into a bedroom as a bedside stand, or placed in a hallway to create contrast.

Clean the surface with a dry microfibre cloth to remove dust, apply a high-quality beeswax polish sparingly once or twice a year, and keep the piece away from direct heat sources and sunlight to prevent veneer warping.
