This 19th-century Victorian sporting overmantle mirror presents a rectangular giltwood frame finished in gold leaf over moulded gesso. The decorative scheme includes a central carved fox head crest at the top, flanked by foliate acanthus leaves and elaborate Rococo scrollwork along the outer edges. The reflective glass shows light oxidation and minor age-related imperfections, while the wooden frame displays minor historic knocks, marks, wear, and sympathetic refinishing. The overall maximum dimensions measure 105 cm high by 75 cm wide and 7 cm deep. Placed above a mantel in a traditional living room, drawing room, or country house library, this piece adds character to a fireplace setting. The scale suits a prominent wall position where the fox hunting theme and gilded ornamentation serve as a focal point in the interior scheme.

An overmantle mirror is a decorative wall mirror designed specifically to hang above a fireplace mantlepiece, a feature that became prominent during the 19th century to amplify ambient light and serve as a central room focal point.

19th-century gilt mirrors were typically constructed with carved timber or molded gesso over a softwood base, finished with hand-applied gold leaf gilding and fitted with silvered plate glass.

Authentic pieces display signs of natural age, such as slight oxidation or foxing on the glass, fine cracking in the gesso substrate, hand-carved wood backing panels, and gentle surface wear to the gold leaf gilding.

Position the mirror directly above a fireplace hearth or a long hallway console table to anchor the space, pairing the ornate gilded frame with clean-lined contemporary furnishings or dark paint palettes.

Dust the frame using a dry, soft-bristled brush or microfibre duster, avoiding liquids or commercial chemical solvents which can strip the thin gold leaf and damage the underlying plaster or gesso.
