FAQs

French decorative boxes from the 1920s frequently utilised silver plating over base metals such as copper or brass, drawing inspiration from classical art and historical scenes to appeal to the bourgeois interior market.

These items were typically manufactured using a base of copper or a copper alloy, which was then coated in a thin layer of silver using electroplating techniques, often complemented by hand-engraved or embossed surface detailing.

Authenticity is generally identified through manufacturer hallmarks or stamps, natural patination and wear showing the underlying copper base, and the weight and craftsmanship consistent with early 20th-century European metalwork.

This type of decorative object functions well as a focal point on a coffee table, bookshelf, or mantelpiece, contrasting sharply against minimalist surfaces or complementing other metallic accents in a curated space.

Preservation requires gentle dusting with a soft cloth and avoiding harsh chemical polishes that can strip the thin silver layer; instead, specialised non-abrasive silver cleaners should be used sparingly if tarnish removal is necessary.
