This Edwardian Arts and Crafts single side chair follows the manner of William Birch, presented in a warm brown oak timber with a woven rush seat. The tall uprights terminate in turned finials, framing a curved top rail and a central vertical back splat pierced with a heart cutout. Turned front legs connect via stretcher rails beneath the square rush seat, while a stamp appears on the back leg. The piece stands 98 cm high, 44 cm wide, and 44 cm deep. A traditional design well-suited for placement around a dining table or as an accent seat in a hallway or study.

Originating in the late nineteenth century, Arts and Crafts furniture emphasizes traditional craftsmanship, simple forms, and visible construction details, reacting against mass industrial production.

These chairs are predominantly crafted from solid woods such as oak, ash, or beech, often paired with natural woven rush seats and unvarnished or wax finishes.

Look for maker stamps on the frame, hand-woven rush seats, mortise and tenon joinery, cut-out motifs like hearts or spades, and natural timber patination.

Use a single chair as a functional accent piece at a hallway writing desk, placed in a quiet corner, or paired with contemporary minimalist decor to highlight timber grain.

Apply clear beeswax to the timber frame to maintain lustre, keep the item away from direct heat sources to prevent the rush from drying out, and dust regularly with a soft dry cloth.
