Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Originating in the early 19th century during the British Regency period, these specialised boxes were designed for storing sewing materials, trinkets, or jewellery. They reflect the European fascination with East Asian decorative arts, characterised by hand-painted Orientalist scenes and lacquer finishes.

Japanning involved applying multiple layers of spirit-varnish or oil-based lacquer onto a timber core to imitate Asian lacquerwork. Decorative scenes were hand-painted or executed in raised gesso before gilding, and cabinets were frequently fitted with cast metal feet or brass mounts.

Authentic pieces display fine craquelure across the varnished surface, genuine wear along handling edges, and cast brass or bronze feet. Internal construction typically features fine hand-cut dovetail joints and original textile or paper linings.

These decorative storage pieces function well on a sideboard, dressing table, or desk, providing functional storage for small items. Placing the painted surface against a neutral or dark backdrop highlights the detailed artwork.

Keep the cabinet away from direct sunlight, radiators, and changing humidity levels to prevent timber movement and lacquer flaking. Dust gently using a dry microfibre cloth, and avoid liquid cleansers, solvents, or silicone polishes.
